Stressors stack up in modern life, grabbing you by the muscles in your neck and shoulders and never letting go. In a day/week/month full of relentless responsibility we can often feel as if we are not flourishing.
To flourish is to have a life that feels meaningful and rich, despite the challenges we’ll inevitably face. If you can’t make it to Casa Windsong in Costa Rica for the curative balm of sea breezes and sunshine, your daily routines and rituals can help you generate feelings of flourishing.
Awareness
Take a moment or two and look around. Notice some of the small details you usually overlook, then, slowly close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Bring your attention to the sounds in your environment. Give yourself a few moments to relax and rest.
Here, at Casa Windsong, we wake up every morning to the sights and sounds of the jungle. As the day slowly brightens, there’s a symphony of birds singing – reminding us that life is as joyful as a song.
Connection
Connection is another pillar of flourishing. Those who know suggest you generate small “sparks of connection” every day. Compliment a co-worker, smile at your barista, or text someone you love. You will immediately feel a warmth in your heart and lightness in your step.
If you join us in the Costa Rican jungle, you’ll experience an immediate sense of connection – both with the natural world as well as with oneself. We can attest to that. You can’t help but feel the pulse of life from all the animals, birds, insects and, perhaps, even the plants. There’s plenty of evidence that trees should be hugged and walking through a forest or jungle is like having an energy bath.
Purpose
Finally, take a moment at check in with yourself – our purpose is a North Star that guides us; comprised of a mix of our deepest aspirations combined with our guiding principles.
You can recognize meaning and purpose in your everyday life if you take a moment to reflect on it.
“Try this exercise to get clearer about what really matters to you. Start by reflecting on your interests, causes you’re passionate about and meaningful moments in your life. Then, ask yourself why they mattered. Maybe graduating from school represents values like perseverance, hard work or the importance of education... Finally, look for ways to reinforce those values. If part of your purpose is learning, for example, find ways to express your commitment to it, whether it’s reading, sharing information with others or listening to podcasts.” Jancee Dunn NYTimes ‘Well’ Newsletter
