How safe is the house?
We have camera surveillance covering the perimeter (not the pool area) including the entrances, primary steps, sides of the house and the back.
We ask everyone to keep all the doors locked, especially the main gate.
How safe is the town for visitors?
Manuel Antonio is generally safe, but like anywhere, it's good to stay cautious. Don't leave valuables unattended at the beach or in your car. If you arrive early, we offer a bag drop-off service starting at noon to keep your belongings secure.
Tell me about the money
You don't need to bring a large amount of currency if you expect you will be able to get to an ATM machine. All banks have ATM machines. Most businesses will take credit cards, but they do pass on the vendor fees to you. In this country Cash is King still.
The Costa Rican currency is called the colon (colones). Of course it is accepted everywhere. So is USD$. All ATM machines will dispense colones from your local bank card or credit card. Most will dispense USD$.
Groceries
It is natural to need a grocery store. There are a few great options.
If you are in a car, and want to stock up on your way to the Casa then you could choose to stop at BM Supermarket found at the turn off the highway.
In Quepos, across the Pali, is MIniprice, catering to the tastes of expats.
Up the road ½ a kilometer is Super Joseth. For a small fee they will deliver. +(506) 2777-1095
For fresh fruits and vegetables, there is no better place that Cosechas.
BANKS
ATM's are at every bank. They accept international debit and credit cards. They dispense Colones - CR currency - and USD$.
Not all banks dispense USD$
BANKS: Promerica
BCR (Banco de Costa Rica)
Banco Nacional
Davidenda
Pharmacies
One of the better stocked pharmacy's is Gerardo across from the Malecón in Quepos.
There are pharmacies everywhere and they are open 7 days a week.
One of the interesting facts about 'farmacias' in Costa Rica is they are able to dispense many drugs that require presciptions in North America.
What are the best ways to get to Casa Windsong from SJO airport?
You have a few options. You can take a quick 20-minute flight to Quepos airport and grab a cab, or we can arrange a car and driver for the 3-hour drive. There's also a daily shuttle from your San Jose hotel. Feeling adventurous? Hop on a local bus from the Tracopa station. Let us know how we can help!
Do we need a car?
It depends on how you want to vacation while here. We have a local bus that runs every 15 minutes all day between Quepos and the park. The bus stop is a 4 minute walk from the house. As there is only one road, the bus takes you everywhere really. All tours and excursions offer transportation to and from Casa Windsong. We also have plenty of taxis and we also have a small Uber group that are relatively responsive. If you want to explore, a car is the way to go.
Taxis
Red cabs are official and licensed cabs. There are cab stands by the bus station in Quepos and next to Pacifica Colonial (next to Tulemar).
Call +(506)-2777-2020/0425/0734, or hail on the street. The dispatcher will give you the cab's number so you are sure you have the right one.
Most cabs don't have meters, so ask the price before you get in. For example, from town to here is c4,000. (approximately $3.70)
UBER exists here, but there are still only a few drivers. You'll see on your UBER app if that will work for you in the moment.
Local Bus
You may notice there is a single, main road between Quepos and Manuel Antonio Park. There is a bus that runs between the bus station in Quepos and the park. During the day, starting at 6am, the bus passes by every 15 minutes in both directions. After 6pm it runs every half hour until 9pm.
The cost varies through the year but is always less than c500 (USD$1) and the bus driver can make change for colones.
Bus stops are trickier to identify. There are some visible bus stops benches but these are not at all the stops. (They are privately financed). The nearest stops to our house are as follows:
To go to Quepos, stand in front of Amigos Del Rio found to the corner to the right on the main road.
To go to the park/beach, stand to the right of the road to "Ronny's", across the street from the stop in front of Amigos.
You can download the free App "MontonCR" and it will show you the bus in live time.
